Mathematician and serial entrepreneur
On December 11, 2024, Les Echos published a profile of Pierre-Arnaud Coquelin, mathematician and serial entrepreneur. The article presents Wheere as a geolocation start-up developing a "GPS 2.0" system.
Wheere: innovation at the crossroads of mathematics and industry
Wheere's challenge addresses a problem well known to telecoms engineers: accurately locating objects or people in environments where traditional GPS signals fail.
"The solution comes from a mathematician: Pierre-Arnaud Coquelin. Unknown to the general public, this is the man behind his third start-up" Isabelle Bellin for Les Echos
From start-up to start-up
With Wheere, founded in 2020, Pierre-Arnaud Coquelin is pursuing an entrepreneurial trajectory begun over a decade ago. After selling his first company, Vekia, which specialized in crowd forecasting for supermarkets, and running Mac-Lloyd, a GPS system for sports enthusiasts, he is now tackling a larger-scale application: a global network of satellites.
An atypical trajectory
Despite a successful entrepreneurial career, Pierre-Arnaud Coquelin remains attached to his scientific roots. With a doctorate in artificial intelligence, he distinguished himself from the outset with original innovations, such as an artificial intelligence program dedicated to the game of Go. His current ambitions, though rooted in industrial issues, retain a theoretical dimension, testifying to his interest in applied mathematics.

Want to find out more about Wheere?
Wheere is the French deeptech revolutionizing geolocation by filling the main gap in GPS.
The company offers a patented geolocation technology that works both indoors and outdoors. Unlike other existing technologies, it is the only one capable of penetrating up to 50 meters of concrete and covering an area of one square kilometer with just four antennas.
After raising 11 million euros in seed funding in 2023, the startup is preparing its Series A.
To make its solution accessible around the globe without the need to deploy terrestrial antennas, the company plans to launch a fleet of nearly 300 satellites by 2030.
