The term Seveso refers to industrial sites that pose a risk of major accidents related to the handling, manufacture, or storage of hazardous substances (chemicals, gases, explosives, etc.).
This designation comes from a European directive introduced after the industrial accident in Seveso, Italy, in 1976. The aim of this regulation is to impose strict safety measures and increased monitoring on operators in order to prevent any risk to the surrounding population and the environment.
There are two classification levels depending on the quantity of hazardous materials present on the site:
- Low Seveso threshold: for sites presenting a significant risk.
- High Seveso threshold: for sites presenting a major risk, subject to even more rigorous controls.
